The 2024 Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Track and Field State Championship occurred last month at Middle Tennessee State University’s Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium. Athlete Josh Detroit and Unified Partner Gary Davis competed in the boys' 100-meter dash from Nolensville High School. Their partnership began when their Coach, Mrs. Holly, approached Davis about becoming a Unified Partner, an opportunity he described as a “really good opportunity and experience.”
“Every day at practice is a great memory, you have a group of really smart individuals who work hard, are competitive, and love each other, and that’s a great thing you can have,” shared Davis when asked about memorable moments.
“At Nolensville, we always talk about how ‘we are one,’” Davis said about their team spirit. “We love each other, and we bring that over to athletics. We treat everybody the same.”
Davis offered this advice to his fellow Athletes and Unified Partners: “Realize everybody is trying their best. Your best may not be someone else’s best, be nice and considerate; you never know what someone is going through.”
Looking ahead, both Davis and Detroit plan on going to college. Davis will enroll at Middle Tennessee State University in the fall to major in journalism, with dreams of becoming a sports journalist.
